How would you feel if an employer or your client (if you are a business owner) exceeded your expectations?

Radio AnnouncersIt doesn’t happen often, but it happens.

Expectations Exceeded

At one point in my career, I landed a sales position. My compensation was a combination of salary, commissions, and bonuses. The hiring manager didn’t make any wild promises of great riches. In fact, he candidly told me, “It is possible you won’t make any bonuses or commissions. It’s all up to you. Some years are good. Some years are not so good. It all depends. Some things you have control of and other things, like the weather, are out of your control.”

“It all depends…” I wondered. I took the position anyway (even with a cut in pay) because I wanted to develop my selling skills. I had interviewed for a wide variety of sales positions and this was the first one that didn’t promise me riches beyond my wildest dreams. My sales manager seemed honest and understated.

Honest and Understated

He was – both honest and understated. My bonuses and commissions exceeded my wildest expectations. I went on to double my income every five years and stayed with the company for more than 15 years.

It doesn’t happen often, but every now and then, you run across a company that exceeds your expectations. Every now and then, you’ll come across an individual that exceeds your expectations.

There is an old saying in marketing that “It takes a great client to make a great marketing firm.”

There are two sides to this equation. Which side are you?
