It’s a given. If you dislike your mother-in-law, she’ll move in with you.

I dislike driving. It always has seemed like a waste of time. It probably has something to do with growing up near New York City. A short drive was twenty minutes.

Does it ever seem like you attract activities that you dislike?

When I entered into a sales position, I covered thirteen states across the United States. I drove over 60,000 miles (100,000 km) a year. At 60 mph (100 km per hour), this is about 1,000 hours of driving per year. Most drives were a little under five hours. It was a lot of time behind the wheel, often at night because I wasn’t going to waste the day driving.

I dreaded getting into the car.

After about six months, I asked myself, “How can I make the driving something to look forward to?”

Growing up in New York, I loved talk radio, but there wasn’t much talk radio in the Midwest. I came across a motivational speaker, Mike Wickett, with an audio tape series. Once I started listening to his motivational tapes, I was hooked.

I’ve since listened to all the classic motivational tapes. From Anthony Robbins to Zig Ziglar, I’ve listened to all of the best motivational speakers in the world. And they’ve changed my life.

Today, I am no longer driving five hours at a time. In fact, the car sits in the driveway most of the time. I don’t enjoy driving any more today than I did years ago. But I do look forward to the opportunity to take a long drive with a great motivational CD.
